This guide explains how to set up birthday rewards in Joy - customize when customers can claim their birthday points with exact date, month, or date range options.

What is "Birthday reward" feature?

Birthday Reward is an automated customer engagement feature that celebrates your customers' special days with personalized rewards. This feature integrates directly with your customer database to automatically track and reward customers on or before their birthdays.

Why do you need "Birthday reward" feature?

Birthday reward is a great way to make your customers feel special and appreciated. By offering loyalty points or discounts on their birthday, you encourage customers to engage with your store and create a positive connection with your brand. In this guide, we'll walk you through how to set up Birthday reward and ensure your customers enjoy celebrating with your store.

How to set up "Birthday reward" feature

The birthday rewards setup process includes configuring how rewards are delivered and when customers can claim them.

Configure Program information

Choose Reward programs -> Earning programs -> Click Add rule -> Choose Birthday reward

  • Program name: Enter the name of the earning reward program

  • Date format: You can set the customer date format to MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY

  • Start date and End date: Define the activity duration for your program

Set up Reward settings

a. How to deliver reward

Under How to deliver reward, you'll select one out of two options:

  • Automatic (system gives reward): Rewards are automatically added to the customer's account when they become eligible

  • Manual (customer claims reward): Customers must take action to claim their birthday reward during the eligible period

b. When to reward

  • Under When to reward, you'll see three options:

    • Exact birthday date: Rewards are only available on the customer's exact birth date

    • Calendar month of birthday: Rewards can be claimed at any time during the customer's birth month

    • Around birthday (custom date range): Rewards can be claimed within a specified number of days before and after the birth date

  • Select your preferred timing option

  • Depending on your selection, you'll see additional configuration options:

    • For Exact birthday date: You can choose to Grant reward early by specifying a number of days before the birthday

    • For Around birthday: You can specify the number of days before and after the birthday that the reward will be available

c. Set up Reward method

  • Point: Reward customers with a specific number of loyalty points

  • Discount percentage: Offer a percentage off their next purchase

  • Discount amount: Provide a fixed amount discount for their next order

Save your changes and press Turn on Birthday reward program

Set up Reward conditions (for Birthday discount rewards)

  • Purchase location: Determine where customers can redeem their birthday rewards by choosing one of these options.

  • Discount products: Configure which products are eligible for birthday reward redemption.

  • Discount applied to order value: Set any minimum purchase requirements for birthday reward redemption.

  • Discount combinations: Control how birthday rewards interact with other promotions.

  • Coupon expiration date: Set how long customers have to use their birthday discount

Fraud prevention setup

Select frequency of this rewards to protect your program and customers from fraud and abuse.

  • Once per year

  • Once in the lifetime

Set up Birthday reward Notification

  • Go to Notification in the Birthday reward settings

  • Customize the email content to fit your needs

  • Send a test email to ensure accuracy

  • Once satisfied, turn on the Birthday reward program

How customers experience birthday rewards

The customer experience differs based on your configuration settings. How customers receive and interact with their birthday rewards depends on whether you choose automatic or manual reward delivery.

Automatic rewards

With automatic rewards, the system seamlessly handles the entire reward process without requiring customer action. When customers become eligible based on your timing settings, points are automatically added to their account. They'll see a notification in the loyalty widget informing them of their birthday reward, and they can use these points immediately without any additional steps.

If you've configured the "Exact birthday date" option with automatic rewards, customers will receive their points precisely on their birthday. When you enable the "Grant reward early" feature, the system will add points the specified number of days before their actual birthday. For "Calendar month" settings with automatic rewards, points will be credited on the first day of the customer's birth month.

Manual rewards

Manual rewards create an interactive experience that encourages customer engagement with your loyalty program. When customers become eligible for their birthday reward, they'll see a notification in the loyalty widget alerting them to their available reward. To receive their points, they must take action by clicking the "Claim now" button. After claiming, they'll see a confirmation that points have been added to their account and can then use these points for available rewards.

The availability period for manual claims is determined by your timing settings. With "Calendar month" settings, customers can claim their reward at any point throughout their entire birth month, giving them flexibility to claim when they're ready to make a purchase.

Q: What happens if a customer enters their birthday less than 30 days before their actual birth date? A: For anti-fraud purposes, customers must enter their birth date at least 30 days before their birthday to receive the reward.

Q: Can I change the number of points given for birthday rewards? A: Yes, you can customize the point value for birthday rewards in the program settings.

Q: Do customers need to have an account to receive birthday rewards? A: Yes, customers need to be registered in your loyalty program and provide their birth date to be eligible for birthday rewards.

Q: Can I set up different birthday rewards for different VIP tiers?

A: Yes, it is possible. But it is possible on the Advanced plan with the Rule engine turned on. With the advanced rule engine, you are allowed to reward the birthday program differently for each tier. As in the image below, you can have Bronze, Silver, and Gold; each has a different reward, maybe in points, maybe in discount, and maybe in free gifts.
