Joy and Attentive
Send Joy Loyalty data to Attentive and trigger SMS journeys from points, VIP tiers, birthdays, and referrals.
Overview
Attentive is an SMS and email marketing platform. The Joy integration sends your loyalty data to Attentive in two ways:
- Profile data: points balance, VIP tier, membership status, birthday, and referral link are saved on each customer's Attentive profile, ready for segments and message personalization.
- Events: when something happens in your loyalty program, such as a customer earning points or reaching a new tier, Joy sends an event to Attentive that can start a journey.
Data moves one way, from Joy to Attentive.
Data synced to Attentive
Joy saves these custom attributes on the Attentive profile:
| Attribute | What it holds |
|---|---|
joy_loyalty_points | Current points balance |
joy_member_status | Membership status in your loyalty program |
joy_vip_tier | Current VIP tier name |
joy_birthday | Birthday the customer saved in Joy |
joy_referral_url | The customer's personal referral link |
A profile updates as soon as the customer's details change in Joy, for example when their points balance, tier, birthday, or referral link changes. Sync again re-sends every customer at once.
SMS messages reach only customers with a valid phone number. After a sync, Invalid customers shows how many are missing one.
Available events
Choose which of these events Joy sends. In Attentive, they appear with the names below.
| Event in Attentive | Sent when |
|---|---|
| Joy - Points Earned | A customer earns points |
| Joy - Points Redeemed | A customer redeems points for a reward |
| Joy - Points Eligible for Reward | A customer has enough points to redeem a reward |
| Joy - Points Expiring Soon | 7 days before a customer's points expire |
| Joy - VIP Tier Achieved | A customer reaches a new VIP tier |
| Joy - VIP Tier Downgrade | A customer moves down a tier |
| Joy - VIP Tier Reset | A customer's tier resets |
| Joy - Birthday | On the customer's birthday |
| Joy - Birthday Reminder | 7 days before the customer's birthday |
| Joy - Referral Complete | A friend the customer referred completes the referral |
| Joy - Referee Claimed Reward | A referred friend claims their reward |
Every event carries customer_email, customer_phone, loyalty_points, and shop_name. Most events add their own details, such as points_earned and program_name on Points Earned, coupon_code and reward_name on Points Redeemed, tier_name on VIP Tier Achieved, or points_expiring and expiration_date on Points Expiring Soon.
The trigger list inside Joy uses Joy's own labels. In Attentive, look for event names that start with Joy -.
How to connect Attentive
Connect your Attentive account
In Joy, go to Integrations, filter by Email marketing, and open Attentive. Under Step 1: Connect to Attentive API, click Connect. Attentive opens in a new tab: review the access request and click Allow. You return to Joy with the integration connected.
If you click anything other than Allow, Joy shows Authorization Declined. Click Connect again and allow access.
Sync your customers
Under Step 2: Sync data, click Sync again to send all customers to Attentive. The sync runs in the background. When it finishes, you see Valid customers, Invalid customers, Total processed, and Last sync on.
To also subscribe customers to Attentive as they sync, paste a Sign-up Source ID under Subscriber creation (optional) and click Save. Find the ID in your Attentive dashboard under Sign-up Units, in the ID column. Leave it empty and Joy only updates customers who are already Attentive subscribers.
A Sign-up Source ID subscribes customers in Attentive. Use it only for customers who have agreed to receive your marketing messages.
Choose your events
Under Step 3: Set up automation triggers, click Select triggers, tick the events you want, and click Confirm. Joy sends one test event for each selected event so they show up in Attentive, which can take a few minutes.
To send test events again, click Test trigger and enter the email of a customer who subscribes to your Attentive messages. Leave the email blank to use the first customer in your shop.
Build a journey in Attentive
Once your events arrive in Attentive, create a journey that starts from a custom event and pick an event that begins with Joy -. Use the event's details in your message, for example the points a customer just earned or the reward they can now afford.
Journeys worth starting with:
Reward is ready
Trigger: Joy - Points Eligible for Reward
Message: Tell the customer which reward their points now cover, using reward_name and required_points, with a link to redeem.
Points about to expire
Trigger: Joy - Points Expiring Soon
Message: Show points_expiring and expiration_date and point to a reward they can claim before then.
New VIP tier
Trigger: Joy - VIP Tier Achieved
Message: Welcome the customer to tier_name and list what the tier unlocks.
Birthday countdown
Triggers: Joy - Birthday Reminder → Joy - Birthday
Message: A heads-up a week out, then the birthday reward on the day.
