Unused coupon reminders
Automatically remind customers about unused coupons — after they're issued, or before they expire.
Overview
Customers earn coupons and forget them. Unused coupon reminders win back that lost value with automated emails — sent on the schedule you choose, through Joy's native email system. Two independent triggers:
- Coupon reminder: after redeem — sent a set number of days after a coupon is issued to the customer. Best for nudging customers who claimed a reward but haven't used it yet.
- Coupon reminder: before expiry — sent a set number of days before a coupon expires. Best for creating urgency on coupons about to disappear.
Each trigger is off by default and fully independent — turn on one, the other, or both.
How to set up
Open the Coupon reminder tab
Go to Settings → Notifications → More views and open the Coupon reminder tab. You'll see the two triggers: after redeem and before expiry.
Set your reminder schedule
Each trigger has a Reminder schedule — a list of days that decide when emails go out.
- After redeem counts forward from the day the coupon was issued (e.g.
3= 3 days after issue). Default: 3 days after issue. - Before expiry counts back from the coupon's expiry date (e.g.
7= 7 days before it expires). Default: 7 days before expiry.
Click Add reminder to stack more days — up to 5 reminders per trigger, each a whole number from 1 to 365. Example: set before-expiry to 7, 3, 1 to remind a customer a week out, then 3 days, then the day before.
Customize the email
Edit the subject, heading, body, logo, colors, and button — the same editor as every other Joy notification. Useful variables for this email:
{{coupon_code}}— the coupon the customer hasn't used{{coupon_expiry_date}}— when it expires{{send_email_before}}— number of days before expiry (before-expiry trigger only){{customer_name}},{{shop_name}}— personalization
The button links the customer straight to their cart with the coupon auto-applied.
Preview, test, and turn on
Use Send test to check how it lands in the inbox, then toggle the trigger On. Reminders are evaluated once daily, so the first emails go out within 24 hours.
Good to know
- One email per customer per run — if a customer has several qualifying coupons, they're grouped into a single email, not one per coupon.
- Never-expiry coupons are skipped by the before expiry trigger (there's no expiry date to count back from). The after redeem trigger still sends.
- Used, revoked, or already-expired coupons never trigger a reminder.
- Reminders are best-effort and checked once a day — they aren't sent the exact minute a threshold is crossed.
FAQ
Can I send more than 5 reminders?
No — each trigger allows up to 5 days, from 1 to 365.
What happens if I set the same day twice?
Duplicate days are blocked inline — each day in a schedule must be unique.
Do both triggers have to be on?
No. They're fully independent. Many merchants run before expiry alone for urgency.
