Price drop alert

Price drop alert

Email shoppers when an item they saved gets cheaper than the price they saved it at.

Overview

Many shoppers save an item because the price isn't right yet. The Price drop alert emails them when it gets cheaper, so they come back while the lower price is live.

  • Price drop email: sent when a saved item drops below the price it had when the shopper saved it.
  • Your threshold: send only for drops of a minimum percentage, or for any drop.
  • Supported sending methods:
    • Joy Wishlist built-in email: Joy Wishlist designs and sends the email. No other app needed.
    • Marketing app: Klaviyo or Omnisend (coming soon) sends the email. Joy Wishlist tells it when.
    • Wallet pass (with Joy Loyalty): pushes the alert to the shopper's Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass, next to email or on its own.

Price drop is off by default. This page takes you through the whole setup, from choosing a sending method to testing the alert.

Before you start

  • Make sure the Joy Wishlist app embed is on. On the Joy Wishlist home page, App embed should show Active.
  • Each shopper's alert is measured from the price the item had when they saved it, so there's nothing to set per product.

How to set up

1

Open Notifications

From your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Joy Wishlist > Settings, then open the Notifications tab.

2

Choose a sending method

Pick who sends your alert emails. This choice applies to every alert.

  • Joy Wishlist built-in email: Joy Wishlist designs and sends the emails. You don't need another app. Best for stores that don't use a marketing app, or want alerts running right away.
  • Marketing app: a marketing app you already use, such as Klaviyo or Omnisend (coming soon), sends the emails. Best for stores that already send their emails from a marketing app and want wishlist alerts in the same place.

Choosing Marketing app? You still complete every step on the Notifications page. Joy Wishlist decides when each alert fires and passes it to your marketing app to send. So set up and turn on Price drop, and set the send schedule, the same as with built-in email. One thing changes on the page: the last step, Sender details, becomes Connect your marketing app. You then build the email flow in that app.

Wallet pass (optional): in the same section, turn on Also send to Wallet pass to push your alerts to shoppers' lock screens through their Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass. Both need Joy Loyalty on the Advanced plan or higher. For the setup, see Wallet pass alerts.

3

Set up and turn on Price drop

Under Notification types, click Price drop.

  • Trigger when: pick one.
    • Minimum % drop (default): the saved item drops at least a set percentage (default 10%) below the price the shopper saved it at.
    • Any drop: the saved item drops by any amount below the price the shopper saved it at.
  • Turn it on: switch the toggle at the top right to Enabled, then click Save in the top bar. No alerts go out until you do.

Price drop covers every saved item. There's no Apply to setting.

4

Customize the email

In the Price drop email card, click Edit in email builder. Change the subject, banner, text and design, check the preview, and send yourself a test. See Email builder.

With Marketing app, you build the email flow in that app instead.

5

Set the send schedule

Back on the Notifications page, choose when emails go out. This applies to every alert.

  • Send at a set time (default): once a day, around the time you pick (default 10:00), in each shopper's local time. Best for longer sales and permanent price changes.
  • Immediately: goes out as soon as a price drops, after a short grouping window (default 10 minutes) that combines price changes into one email. Best for flash sales and short promotions, when the lower price won't last long.

If we can't detect a shopper's time zone, emails follow your shop's time zone.

6

Set your sender details

Choose who the email comes from.

  • Default: sends from [email protected] under your store name. No setup needed. Best for starting right away, or if you don't have an email address on your own domain.
  • Custom: sends from your own email address, once you verify it and turn it on. Best for stores with their own email domain. Shoppers see your address in the inbox, which builds trust and improves deliverability.

For the full steps, see Sender details.

With Marketing app, this step is Connect your marketing app instead. Click Connect an app in Integrations and connect your app.

Test it yourself

Run one full test before you rely on it. You play the shopper, then the merchant, and watch the email arrive. It takes about 15 minutes.

1

Pick a test product

Choose a product that is in stock, and note its current price.

2

Save it as a shopper

In Shopify, add a customer with an email you can check and set them to receive marketing emails. On your store, sign in as that customer, open the product, choose an option, and save it to the wishlist.

3

Lower the price

In Shopify, open the product and lower the option's Price by more than your minimum, for example from $50 to $40 (20%). Click Save. Changing only the Compare-at price doesn't count.

4

Wait for the email

With Immediately, the email goes out when the grouping window ends (10 minutes by default). With Send at a set time, it goes out at the next send time.

5

Check Sending summary

On the Notifications page, open Sending summary. Price drop shows Sending under Email.

When you're done, set the price back. Raising a price never sends an email.

If the email doesn't arrive, see Troubleshooting.

Reference

The steps above cover the full setup. This part goes deeper into how a price drop is measured and what shoppers see.

How a drop is measured

Each shopper's alert is measured from the price the item had when that shopper saved it. Two shoppers who saved the same product at different prices can get the alert at different times.

SituationWhat happens
The price drops by your minimum or moreThe shopper gets the alert.
The price drops less than your minimumNo alert. With Any drop, the shopper gets it.
The price drops again laterAnother alert, as long as the new price is still below the saved price by your minimum.
The price goes upNo alert. The saved price stays the same.
The shopper saved the item during a saleThe sale price is the saved price.
Only the compare-at price changesNo alert. Compare-at prices aren't used.

What shoppers see

A Price drop email with a -25% badge and the old price crossed out next to the new price

  • The email: the product with a −20% style badge, the old price crossed out next to the new price, and a Shop button. If several saved items drop together, they're grouped into one email, up to 5 items, with a link to the rest in the wishlist.
  • The main button (default Shop now): opens the product page when the email has one item, or the wishlist page when it has several.
  • Unsubscribe: every email has an Unsubscribe here link.

Good to know

  • Off by default: no emails go out until you turn Price drop on and save.
  • Checked again before sending: if the price went back up, or the item sold out, it's left out of the email. Shoppers never get an email for a deal that's no longer live.
  • Saved option: the alert follows the option the shopper saved. Items saved without an option chosen don't get it until the shopper picks one.
  • No frequency limit: a product that keeps dropping in price can send a shopper more than one alert.
  • Recipient estimate: the Price drop page shows roughly how many shoppers could get this alert (≈ N wishlisters). Open, click and revenue tracking isn't available yet.

FAQ

Q: I put a product on sale with a compare-at price. Will shoppers get an alert?
A: Only if the Price itself dropped below the price they saved it at. Joy Wishlist compares prices, not compare-at prices.

Q: A shopper saved the item while it was on sale. What happens when the sale ends?
A: Nothing. The sale price is their saved price, and raising the price doesn't send an alert. They get an alert if the price later drops below that sale price by your minimum.

Q: Can a shopper get more than one alert for the same product?
A: Yes, if the price keeps dropping. Each new drop that is still below their saved price by your minimum sends another alert.

Q: Can I send Price drop alerts for some products only?
A: No. Price drop covers every saved item.

Q: I lowered the price for a few hours, then raised it again. Why did no email go out?
A: Joy Wishlist checks the price again right before sending. With Send at a set time, the price was already back up at send time. For short promotions, use Immediately.
