Joy and LINE
Connect your LINE Official Account to Joy to send loyalty notifications through LINE and reward customers for linking their account.
Why integrate LINE with Joy Loyalty?
LINE is the dominant messaging app in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, where message open rates are far higher than email. With this integration you can:
- Send loyalty notifications through LINE — points earned, rewards, tier changes, and expiry reminders arrive straight in your customers' LINE chat
- Reward customers for connecting LINE — award points the first time a customer links their LINE account and follows your Official Account
- Drive repeat purchases with personalized messages in the channel your customers already use every day
Setup takes about 15–20 minutes.
Before you start
You will need:
| Item | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| LINE Official Account (OA) | LINE Official Account Manager (opens in a new tab) — most brands in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand already have one |
| LINE Developers account | LINE Developers Console (opens in a new tab) — sign in with the same LINE Business ID |
| A Provider | Created in the Developers Console. It represents your company and owns both channels |
| Messaging API channel | Sends push messages and receives follow/unfollow webhooks |
| LINE Login channel | Lets customers log in with LINE so Joy can link their account |
Create both channels under the same Provider. A channel's Provider assignment is permanent and cannot be changed later — if you pick the wrong Provider you have to delete the channel and start again.

The full setup from start to finish: creating both LINE channels, pasting the credentials into Joy, configuring triggers and messages, and a customer connecting their LINE account.
Prefer to follow along in writing? The same steps are below.
Step 1: Set up your LINE channels
Create a Provider
Go to the LINE Developers Console (opens in a new tab) and choose Create a new provider. Give it a name — your brand name works well.
Create the Messaging API channel
Inside your Provider, choose Create a Messaging API channel and link it to your LINE Official Account.
Then collect two values:
- Messaging API tab → Channel access token (long-lived) → click Issue → copy the token
- Basic settings tab → copy the Channel secret
While you are here, we recommend turning off LINE's own Auto-reply messages and Greeting messages so they don't collide with Joy's loyalty messages.
Create the LINE Login channel
In the same Provider, choose Create a LINE Login channel and set App type to Web app.
Then collect two values from the Basic settings tab:
- Channel ID
- Channel secret
Under the LINE Login tab, make sure the scopes profile and openid are enabled.
Link your Official Account to the Login channel (recommended)
In the LINE Login channel → LINE Login tab → Linked LINE Official Account, select the OA you created, then enable Add friend option.
This prompts customers to follow your Official Account automatically when they log in — which is what makes push notifications possible.
Step 2: Connect LINE in Joy
Go to Integrations → LINE → Set up LINE channels and paste the four credentials you just collected.
| Field in Joy | Where to find it in LINE |
|---|---|
| Channel ID | LINE Login channel → Basic settings → Channel ID |
| Channel Secret | LINE Login channel → Basic settings → Channel secret |
| Channel Access Token | Messaging API channel → Messaging API tab → Channel access token (long-lived) |
| Messaging API channel secret | Messaging API channel → Basic settings → Channel secret |
The Channel Access Token and the Messaging API channel secret come from the Messaging API channel. The Channel ID and Channel Secret come from the LINE Login channel. These are two different channels — copying all four from the same one is the most common setup mistake.
Then:
- Click Test connection. Joy verifies both channels and shows the LINE Official Account it found.
- Confirm the account name is correct.
- Click Connect.
The Messaging API channel secret is required. Without it Joy cannot verify follow/unfollow webhooks, so follow tracking is disabled.
Step 3: Paste the Callback URL and Webhook URL back into LINE
This step is required. Joy shows both URLs on the LINE integration page — copy each one into the LINE Developers Console.
| URL from Joy | Paste it into |
|---|---|
| Callback URL | LINE Login channel → LINE Login tab → Callback URL |
| Webhook URL | Messaging API channel → Messaging API tab → Webhook URL, then turn on Use webhook |
If the Callback URL is not whitelisted, LINE rejects every login attempt — no customer can link their account and no notifications are delivered.
If the Webhook URL is missing, Joy cannot tell when a customer follows or unfollows your Official Account, and will keep trying to push messages to people who already unfollowed.
Step 4: Turn on the "Join LINE" earning program
From the LINE integration page, click Go to Program — or go to Reward programs → Earning programs → Add program → Social activity and pick Join LINE from the event dropdown.
In the program you choose How customers join LINE:
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Follow Official Account (recommended) | Customers log in with LINE and follow your connected Official Account. The join is verified, and they can receive loyalty notifications afterwards. The invite link is generated automatically from your connected OA — you don't paste anything. |
| Join a group or community via link | Customers open a LINE group or OpenChat link and earn points on click. LINE groups can't be tracked or messaged, so join verification and notifications are not available. |
Set your Points, customer eligibility (all members or by tier), and start/end dates as with any other earning program, then save and turn the program on.
If LINE isn't connected yet, the program shows a Connect LINE to unlock Follow Official Account banner. You can still open the option, but the program won't save until the integration is connected.
Step 5: Choose your notification triggers
Back on Integrations → LINE, open Notification triggers and select which loyalty events should send a LINE push message. Twelve events are available:
| Trigger | Sent when |
|---|---|
| Earn points | A customer earns points from any earning program |
| Redeem points | A customer redeems points for a reward |
| Points eligible for reward | A customer's balance reaches a redeemable reward |
| Tier achieved | A customer moves up a VIP tier |
| Tier downgrade | A customer moves down a VIP tier |
| Tier reset | A customer's VIP tier is reset |
| Birthday | On the customer's birthday |
| 7 days before birthday | One week before the customer's birthday |
| 7 days before points expire | One week before points expire |
| 3 days before points expire | Three days before points expire |
| Referral successful | A referral is completed |
| Referee claimed reward | Someone the customer referred claims their reward |
Click Save when you're done. Only linked customers who still follow your Official Account receive LINE messages — everyone else keeps getting the email notification as usual.
Step 6: Customize the LINE messages
Under Customize LINE messages, click Edit on any enabled trigger. Each message is a LINE Flex card with three sections and a live Preview.
Content
- Header title — the bold line at the top, for example
🎉 You earned points!. Leave it empty for no header. - Message — the message body. Insert variables using
{curly_braces}. - Image — an optional banner or logo shown at the top of the card.
CTA button
Turn on Add a button to this message to append a call to action:
| Setting | Notes |
|---|---|
| Button label | Defaults to Visit store |
| Button URL | Leave blank to open your storefront homepage |
| Button color / text color | Defaults to LINE green (#06C755) |
| Button style | Filled or Text only |
| Button height | Standard or Compact |
Card style
- Text color and Background color
- Card size — Compact, Standard (default), or Large
Available variables
Each trigger supports its own set of variables, listed under the message field:
| Trigger | Variables |
|---|---|
| Earn points | {customer_name} {points} {program_name} |
| Redeem points | {customer_name} {points} {coupon_code} |
| Tier achieved / Tier downgrade | {customer_name} {tier_name} |
| Referral successful | {customer_name} {points} |
| All other triggers | {customer_name} |
Click Save messages when you're done.
What your customers see
Find the program — the customer opens the loyalty widget or rewards page and sees Join LINE under Ways to Earn.
Connect — they click Connect with LINE, which opens the LINE Login screen.
Approve and follow — they approve the login and add your Official Account as a friend.
Earn points — Joy links the account, awards the points, and the widget shows LINE account linked.
Receive messages — from then on, every trigger you enabled arrives in their LINE chat.
Points for linking are awarded once. Linking again, or unfollowing and re-following, does not award points a second time.
Managing the connection
| Action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Test connection | Re-verifies both channels and shows the Official Account currently detected |
| Disconnect | Stops LINE notifications. Your credentials stay saved and customer links are kept |
| Reconnect | Re-enables the integration with the saved credentials |
| Use different credentials | Clears the saved credentials so you can connect a different Official Account |
Connecting a different LINE Official Account invalidates existing customer links — LINE user IDs are unique per channel, so customers will need to link again.
FAQ
Do customers have to follow my Official Account to get notifications?
Yes. LINE only allows push messages to users who have added your OA as a friend. That's why we recommend the Follow Official Account join option, and linking your OA to the Login channel.
Does LINE charge for these messages?
Yes — messages count against your own LINE Official Account plan. The free plan includes a limited number of messages per month and paid plans add more. Joy does not charge per message. Check your LINE OA plan for the current limits in your region.
Can a customer link more than one LINE account?
No. One LINE account links to one customer, and one customer links to one LINE account.
What happens if a customer unfollows my Official Account?
Joy stops sending them LINE messages. Their account link is kept, so if they follow again the messages resume.
A customer isn't receiving LINE messages. Why?
- They never linked their LINE account
- They unfollowed your Official Account
- The Webhook URL isn't set, so Joy can't track follow status
- The trigger isn't enabled under Notification triggers
- Your LINE Official Account has hit its monthly message quota
Can I use a personal LINE account?
No. You need a LINE Official Account plus a LINE Developers Provider.
Why does the "Follow Official Account" option say I need to connect LINE?
That option depends on the integration. Connect LINE under Integrations → LINE first, then reopen the program.
