Joy and Seguno

Use Joy customer metafields and Shopify Flow triggers to build loyalty-aware Seguno campaigns.

Joy customer metafields are available on the Essential plan and above. VIP Tier and Tier Point also require an active VIP Tier program.

Overview

Joy and Seguno work together through Shopify's native data and automation layers:

  1. Customer metafields hold the customer's current loyalty state. Use them in Shopify segments and Seguno email personalization.
  2. Shopify Flow triggers fire when a loyalty event happens, such as a tier upgrade, reward becoming available, or points approaching expiry.

Because Joy and Seguno are both built around Shopify's native customer data, this integration works out of the box for most stores. Joy publishes loyalty state through customer metafields and loyalty events through Shopify Flow. Seguno uses the same Shopify data for segmentation, personalization, and campaigns.

You do not need a separate customer database, custom connector, direct OAuth connection, or private API between the two apps.

How to set up customer metafields

1

Enable customer metafields in Joy

Open Joy, then go to Settings → Additional features → Show metafields on Shopify admin. Click Turn on.

2

Allow third-party app access

Select Allow third-party app access, then confirm. This moves the selected definitions to the public app namespace that Seguno and other Shopify apps can read.

When third-party access is off, Joy uses the app-owned $app:joy_loyal namespace. Seguno cannot use those protected definitions.

3

Choose and sync the fields

Choose the loyalty fields you want to expose, then wait until Customer metafields last updated at shows the completed sync time.

To refresh existing or stale values later, click Sync metafields data when no sync is running.

4

Verify the fields in Shopify

Open a known member under Shopify admin → Customers. Compare the metafield values with the same customer in Joy.

With Allow third-party app access enabled, Joy writes these definitions:

Name shown in ShopifyNamespace and keyValue
Joy Point Balanceavada_joy_definition.numberPointCurrent point balance
Joy VIP Tieravada_joy_definition.tierNameAssigned VIP tier name
Joy Tier Pointavada_joy_definition.tierPointPoints used for VIP tier qualification
Joy Customer Typeavada_joy_definition.customerTypemember, guest, or left
Joy Customer Birthdayavada_joy_definition.birthdayCustomer birthday as a date

VIP Tier and Tier Point are created only when the store has access to VIP Tiers and the program is active.

5

Create a Shopify customer segment

Go to Customers → Segments → Create segment. Add a condition using one of the verified Joy customer metafields.

Examples:

  • Joy VIP Tier equals Gold.
  • Joy Point Balance is greater than or equal to the points needed for a reward.
  • Joy Customer Type equals member.

Choose the metafield from Shopify's segment editor instead of typing the namespace and key from memory. See Shopify's metafield segment reference (opens in a new tab).

6

Use the segment and fields in Seguno

In Seguno, edit a newsletter's Recipients, choose Subscribers within specific segments, and select the Shopify segment you saved.

To personalize the email, add a Rich Text section, choose Metafield, select the verified Joy field, and set a fallback value. Send a test email before publishing.

See Seguno's guides for choosing customer segments (opens in a new tab) and using Shopify metafields (opens in a new tab).

How to use Joy Shopify Flow triggers

Metafields answer "what is true now?" Flow triggers answer "what just happened?" Use Flow when the timing of the loyalty event matters.

Useful Joy triggers include:

Campaign momentJoy Shopify Flow trigger
Welcome a new loyalty memberCustomer joined loyalty program
Tell a member that a reward is availableCustomer has enough points for reward
Follow up after point activityEarn points; Redeem points; POS point redemption
Warn before point expiry30 days, 7 days, or 3 days before the point expiration date

1

Create a workflow in Shopify Flow

In Shopify Flow, create a workflow and choose the relevant Joy trigger. The available trigger variables depend on the event. Use Flow's variable picker to inspect the customer reference and loyalty data exposed by that trigger.

2

Prepare a Seguno audience

Use Shopify Flow conditions to narrow the workflow. Then add a Shopify action such as Add customer tags when you need to build a reusable segment for Seguno.

For example:

Joy: VIP tier achieved
→ Condition: New tier name equals Gold
→ Shopify: Add customer tag joy-gold-tier-achieved
→ Shopify segment uses that tag
→ Seguno sends to subscribers in that segment

If Seguno provides a suitable action in your Shopify Flow editor, you can use it directly. Otherwise, use the Joy trigger to update Shopify-native customer data or tags, then target the resulting Shopify segment in Seguno.

3

Build and test the Seguno email

Use the matching Shopify segment as the audience. Add current Joy metafields, such as Point Balance or VIP Tier, to the email when needed.

Test the workflow with a customer who has marketing consent. Confirm the trigger payload, Shopify tag or segment membership, fallback values, and final Seguno recipient count before activating it.

Loyalty membership does not provide email marketing consent. Seguno sends marketing emails only to subscribed customers, so the recipient count can be lower than the Shopify segment size.

Configuration options

Allow third-party app access controls whether Seguno and other apps can read Joy's structured customer metafields. Keep it enabled while using Joy fields in Seguno.

Enabled metafields controls which of the five Joy fields are synced. Disable fields you do not intend to share.

Seguno's guide also refers to lifetime spend and store credit. These are not fields synced by Joy's customer metafield feature. Use Shopify spending or store-credit data only when it is independently available and verified for your store.

Tips & best practices

  • Use metafields for current state and Flow triggers for event timing.
  • Configure fallback text for every personalized field.
  • Mention point expiry only when the program has an applicable expiry rule; Point Balance does not include an expiry date.
  • Keep Flow tags specific to the event, such as joy-gold-tier-achieved, so segments remain understandable.
  • Test with both a subscribed customer and a customer without marketing consent.

FAQ

Does Seguno connect directly to Joy?

No. Joy writes data and emits events through Shopify. Seguno uses Shopify-native customer data, segments, and compatible automation paths.

Which Joy metafields can Seguno use?

With third-party access enabled, Joy can expose Point Balance, VIP Tier, Tier Point, Customer Type, and Birthday under the avada_joy_definition namespace.

Can Joy trigger an email when a customer reaches a new tier?

Joy provides the VIP tier achieved Shopify Flow trigger. Use the trigger to prepare a Shopify-native audience or a compatible Seguno action, then test the complete workflow before activating it.

Why is VIP Tier unavailable?

Confirm that the Joy plan supports VIP Tiers, the VIP Tier program is active, and the customer has an assigned tier.
